January 15th 2010

I continue to see a positive change in Makoa everyday. I’m sitting here at the hospital with Makoa on my chest, writing this blog on my phone, and I can’t think of another place I’d rather be. On second thought, I’d rather be at home with him on my chest, but hopefully that day will be here soon!

The nurses got another sample of his urine to double check the numbers, and they were of course normal. They switched him off the more powerful antibiotic and put him on a less potent one. The test to see if he actually has a urinary tract infection won’t come back for a few days, but they have to error on the side of caution.

Sweet Little Man

When I arrived after work, I’ve of course found them preparing to draw more blood. They told me that they need to make sure the blood/medicine levels are correct and that they are not overdosing him. I’m not going to lie, I’m sick of them drawing blood. I’ve talked to them numerous times about spreading the tests out to make sure his body has enough time to recover. I suppose it’s better if I’m not around when it happens. I think it’s just the natural reaction to want to protect your child no matter what. I do find solace in the fact that he won’t remeber this and what he’s going through.

There definitely was positive news on the day as well. It’s Makoa’s 2nd day off oxygen and he’s doing brilliantly. We’ve discovered the optimal position for his breathing which is laying on his side. Because of his jaw and weak tongue muscles, the tongue will occasionally slip back an block his airway if he’s relaxed and on his back. We are constantly learning ways to hold, posistion, and feed Makoa that give him the best numbers.

Wide awake for the big weigh-in

Little Makoa is also back up to the 5 lb mark! He has now passed his birth weight by just a tiny bit, and we are extremely blessed to have hit that milestone! He continues to work on his feeding to gain strenght. He only took 3 cc’s off the breast to day, but Tiffany and I both realized that it’s just part of the development process he must go through.

There are a couple things that I’m very excited about over the weekend. The first being a little thing called sleep. With all my back-and-forth between home, work, and hospital, I’m ready for a good nights sleep. The kids are heading to Uncle Kevin’s tomorrow for a little playtime which hopefully means a couple extra hours of shut-eye. The second thing I’m excited for is my three-day weekend. I have Monday off which means one thing… more sleep.

Grammys on call for tomorrow morning for some quality cuddling time an probably some new schwag. Well be rolling in around 11am for the feeding appointment. Should be a pretty nice little saturday.  I ended up holidng Makoa for three hours on my chest and I left him all bundled up with lots of kisses.

Yummy!
